Overview of the counselling services at the HSG:
Selected counselling services for your studies:
Writing Lab: If you want to learn how to write scientifically
As part of a cross-level qualification concept, the HSG Writing Lab has developed an integrative writing support programme. It offers coaching, advice and professional support for students in their individual writing processes at all levels. In doing so, the Writing Lab works closely with the teaching staff and programme managers.
The Writing lab offers students:
- Courses on subject-specific or subject-independent writing
- Workshops on specific writing topics
- Individual writing counselling
Coaching: If you need personal support during the Assessment Year
The Coaching Programme of the University of St.Gallen is an optional additional offer for students in the Assessment Year. It offers ideas for personal development, helps to reflect on one's personal life situation and promotes important interdisciplinary core competencies of the students (self-reflection, self-responsibility, social competence and leadership skills). Guidance from experienced coaches and participation in selected seminars strengthen individuality, create orientation and stability and open up space for discussions about values and goals in life and studies.
Mentoring: If you want to find a personal mentor
The mentoring programme of the University of St.Gallen and HSG Alumni fosters your professional and personal development at the Bachelor's, Master's and PhD level. Mentors from the fields of business, politics, medicine, culture and science accompany you individually over a period of two years.
The exchange of knowledge, opinions and experiences supports you in overcoming current challenges, reflecting on personal situations and gaining a career-oriented vision.
Career and Corporate Services (CSC): For questions about your career start
Career & Corporate Services (CSC) is your first point of contact for all career-related issues. The CSC team provides you with individual career counselling - we check your application documents, develop suitable career perspectives with you and give you useful tips for your career start. You can optimise your application documents for a specific job and prepare yourself in a targeted manner (mock interview).
In seminars, workshops and training sessions at the CSC, you will acquire professional, practical and individual knowledge. Take a look at our HSG career platform to find out about job vacancies, workshops and other career events. Looking for a job or an internship? You'll find what you're looking for on our career platform.
It is important to us to promote the practical work experience of our students in the best possible way. We offer students interesting job opportunities in the administration, the institutes and the schools of the University of St.Gallen.
Financing your studies: If you need financial support
There are many ways of financing studies: employment, cantonal scholarships, private loans or simply family support. The Swiss scholarship and loan system is federally organised and therefore seems confusing to many. On the one hand, the Advice Center for Study Funding provides information about all these financing options - in person, by telephone or also by E-Mail. On the other hand, the University of St.Gallen has a loans and scholarships fund that provides financial support to enrolled students in the Assessment Year, at the Bachelor's and Master's levels. In addition, there are numerous other public and private bodies that award educational grants. You will find a scholarship and loans database on our website.
Financial aid applications must be submitted to our Student Financial Aid Office with all required documentation. The application forms can be downloaded via Compass. The application deadline for a scholarship and loan application is 1st March (spring semester) and 1st October (autumn semester).
Support with questions about the IT infrastructure and tools
We have created a special contact point to provide support for our students: the PC tutors. If you have problems with the public PCs, the scanners or printers or the university's own software applications, you can contact the PC tutors either personally via MS Teams or by e-mail. You can find the most common problems and their solutions here or directly in the knowledge database in StudentWeb (HSG Login required).
Are there computer rooms on campus?
There are five computer rooms (01-U102, 01-U103, 01-U179, 01-U206 and 01-U207) in the main building. If you work with your own computer, you can use our WLAN network:
- With the network "eduroam": Login with HSG-E-Mail address and HSG password (recommended).
- With the "unisgguest" network: Login via browser
Are introductory courses on IT tools offered?
During the StartWeek, the software systems commonly used at the HSG are introduced in the InfoTools module. You will get to know Compass, Office 365, StudyNet, StudentWeb and other portals and tools such as the VPN connection.
During the autumn semester, we also offer an introductory course to the Microsoft Office applications Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Participants receive a detailed introduction to the most important functions and best practices in using these programmes. These introductory sessions are optional and recordings are made available on StudentWeb.
Extracurricular activities
Unisport
To keep your body and mind in balance, Unisport offers you a wide range of sports at its own and third-party sports facilities. On our campus, you have access to a sports complex with sports halls, fitness rooms, an artificial grass pitch, a beach volleyball court and other facilities. Shake off the stress of university and take advantage of our sports programme with professional supervision from around 250 training instructors.
The sports programme includes more than 250 training sessions in over 90 sports every week. Most of our courses and services are provided free of charge. Various additional services are also available for a fee. Some training sessions have a limited number of places.
Student Union (SHSG)
The Student Union (SHSG) is an official body of the University of St.Gallen and actively contributes to its development. It is the umbrella organisation for all student activities at the HSG. Its central tasks are to maintain the coordination of student activities, to facilitate the flow of information, and to provide advice and support. In addition, it fulfills other important functions and accompanies student initiatives in the planning and implementation of projects.
The SHSG is based on voluntary student engagement and distributes this commitment through two channels: Representation of interests (sitting on all important university committees) and services for students. These include the catering businesses [ad]hoc, MeetingPoint and theCO Café, the relaxation room, the student newspaper "prisma" and the International Department with its diverse projects. In addition to representing the student position in the HSG's committees and commissions, the representation of interests includes many other activities such as free legal and appeal advice.
Student Clubs
At the HSG, more than half of all students are involved in one of our almost 120 student clubs or in an academic sorority alongside their studies. There are no limits to your individual interests thanks to the wide range of activities on offer. In this way, you can find a balance to everyday university life, pursue your own goals and invest energy in an organisation that you support and shape with full passion.
